Developing Strategy for Canada’s Iconic Main Street

The Situation

The largest Business Improvement Area in Canada is located at the epicentre of culture, commerce, and community on Yonge Street in Downtown Toronto. In their quest to continue their important work as leaders building a vibrant, inclusive, and innovative neighbourhood, the Downtown Yonge BIA (DYBIA) required a new Strategic Plan, to be developed in collaboration with a very diverse group of stakeholders from Cadillac Fairview and Ryerson University to property developers and established small businesses. This Strategic Plan needed to set the vision and direction of the organization for the long term while also providing clear, achievable strategies and objectives for the staff team to immediately operationalize. The plan also needed to be accessible and digestible in both language and visual style to encourage engagement from community partners once implementation began.

The Solution

To build the best plan possible for the DYBIA, an extensive research and engagement process was developed and implemented. This comprehensive community conversation generated important insights that validated, challenged, and provided new perspectives on the neighbourhood’s future, and the role of the organization in achieving important and ambitious goals. A thoughtful series of engagements with the leadership of the organization, including the Board of Directors, led to the development of a robust Strategic Plan that is ambitious, leadership-oriented but also realistic, and ultimately, was widely supported by stakeholders in business, government and education. Once approved, the plan was translated into a final creative showpiece that is both professional and impressive, befitting of the importance the neighbourhood plays in the city of Toronto, the province, and the country.
